People come in and out of our lives for reasons we sometimes can’t understand. These people are teachers, preachers and friends. They inspire us. They contribute to our spiritual growth.

We find such an encounter in I Corinthians, Chapter 3, where Paul is taking about Appollos and his teaching. Paul says, “ I did the planting. Appollos did the watering. God gave the growth.” So in today’s language, you might say that a spiritual journey is an organic process. For all our planning and committees and meetings bound by structure and formality, the work of the church can be considered a process where God and nature is working, sometimes without our awareness.

In our search for a new director for our music ministry here at Pilgrim Church, we have come to believe we have been blessed. Fred Onoswerosuoke (Ohno-zwello-so-kay) is part of that blessing. He has come into the life of this church and this community for reasons we may not fathom. But God does.

You see Fred O had people pursuing him. He is a talented, energetic, spirit-filled man who freely shares his gift of music for the glory of God. FredO came to use with an impressive resume. He is a conductor, a recording producer, a composer, a pianist and the list goes on. We believe that his work is guided by the Holy Spirit. He wanted to be here while others pursued him.

He has traveled from Ghana to the United States. He’s moved to St. Louis to New Orleans and back again. We see in him “God’s growth.” And we believe that his passion, energy and belief in the power and place of music in the life of the church and its members will inspire us and sustain us and contribute to our spiritual growth.

God brings us together for reasons we may not understand. We come together as a body to worship by lifting every voice. And worship strengthens our faith. So let us be so strong and adopt the words in Psalm 57 as our own: “My heart is ready, God, my heart is ready; I will sing, and make music for you. Awake, my glory, awake lyre and harp, that I may awake the Dawn. I will praise you among the peoples Lord, I will make music for you among the nations...” Please join us in welcoming FredO to our home and community we call Pilgrim Congregational Church.
